Dave Blanton enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1966 and served as a mechanic and machine gunner with the Third Amphibian Battalion, First Marine Division. He was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained when his tractor was destroyed by a landmine. Blanton stayed in the Marine Corps until 1976 and later served in the Air Force Reserves during Desert Storm.
