Forever Loving Originals, 2021
When it comes to music, especially within funk and soul we (music nerds) often spend a lot of our time in the past, searching for the sound from a particular era or trying to find something untold. I try my best to keep one foot in the past and one foot in the present, as there a lot of great artists who too can provide that 'sound' we desire so much. Over the past couple of years this artist in particular has always had me reflect deeply on what it means to make meaningful music.
On Sunday 28th May 2023, I had the pleasure to see Cleo Sol perform live at the Royal Albert Hall. Nearly two weeks later and I am still thinking about it. Going into full detail would need a better time/place to vent, but I can say from a glance it was an emotional performance, as every note and vocal was taking the audience through a once in a lifetime journey. Something which I didn't think would happen or occur in that way, but now reflecting back it's almost like I now hold that emotion when listening to her music.
The songwriting/singing in these particular tracks feels like something you would discover through crates of Gospel Soul. Talking directly to the higher power and emphasising each delivery personally. The smallest details like transitioning from one track to another whilst the backing band and choir adjust themselves into another gear. When the album was released it was received with great critical reception, and it will continue to do so as gets better with time.
Nourishing Soul.
