Nothing says old school drag racing like a black and white presentation.
This 1963 broadcast of ABC's Wide World of Sports featured a starstudded field of AAdragsters, and 38 tension laden races. Don Garlits in his "Swamp Rat V" emerged class winner and had the right to setout a Top Eliminator preliminary event between the eight low elapsed times cars during class racing. The winner from the eightcar field to race Garlits for the National Mr. Eliminator title.
This system of determining Top Eliminator qualifiers was a new addition at this year's Nationals, and was so well received by everyone that it appears to be a permanent feature. If such a thing is possible after this year's fantastic racing, the AA/D class eliminations will be even greater from now on as each race involves not only class, but a shot at Top Eliminator.
Promptly at 10:35 a.m. Sunday Top Eliminator racing began with Garlits as an interested spectator near the starting line. Watch all of the action in this actionpacked broadcast.
