■History
Ciragan Palace (Çırağan Palace) is an Ottoman palace built in the 19th century. It is located on the seafront in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul, north of Dolmabahçe Palace and close to Yıldız Palace.

The current Ciragan Palace was built by order of Abdülaziz, the 32nd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Construction of the palace began around 18631867 and was completed in 1871. The exterior of the palace was made of marble, and the interior was made of wood from wall to ceiling. The palace garden was surrounded by a high wall and connected to the Yıldız Palace on the hill just behind it by a bridge. It was customary for each Ottoman sultan to build their own private residence, and Çiran Palace was the last imperial residence built in this style.

After its completion in 1871, Abdülaziz lived in it, but he died in 1876, so it was only used as his private residence for a short period of time. The next Sultan, Murat V, did not build a private residence and continued to use Ciragan Palace as it was. However, due to mental illness, he abdicated after only 93 days and lived under risidence arrest in the palace until his death in 1904.

In November 1909, Ciragan Palace was converted into a parliament building, but shortly thereafter, on January 19, 1910, a fire broke out in the attic and burned down, leaving only the outer walls. Many valuable works of art and books were lost in the fire. In 1930, a soccer stadium was built on the former garden site, but the palace portion was left as ruins without being restored. In 1946, it was no longer owned by the government.

In 1987, the Japanese company Kumagai Gumi purchased the palace and began a largescale restoration. The work was completed in 1989, and Ciragan Palace was revived after about 80 years. During the restoration work, it was given the added function of a hotel, and since 1991, the German hotel chain Kempinski has operated it as a luxury hotel with a fivestar rating, the highest rating in the country.
