October 1917, in France. Croft, a very young English aviator who has not logged more than fifteen hours of flight time, is sent at his request to a squadron of the Royal Flying Corps, of which his future brotherinlaw, Gresham, an aviation ace, is a member. Once there, his fantasies of glory vanish. Gresham cannot get on his plane without drinking; another, overcome by fear, invents illnesses to stay on the ground.
