The death of the dictator and his wife was crudely presented by the “revolutionary” leaders as a Christmas gift to the Romanian people. Two days later, Nicolae and Elena were buried in unmarked graves in a cemetery on the outskirts of Bucharest while images of the “trial” and execution went around the world. Barely a month earlier, Ceausescu had been reelected without the slightest opposition, without the slightest nuance of criticism, as first secretary of the Romanian Communist Party.
