Is an American eagle the same as a bald eagle? Why, yes it is! American Eagles for Kids explores interesting facts about this majestic bird. Most people refer to bald eagles as just that—bald eagles. But because it's the national bird of the USA, we tend to call it the American eagle. The word bald in this case comes from an Old English word that meant white and referred to feathers.
American eagles fly high in the sky and live near large inland lakes and rivers that have lots and lots of fish. They typically build their nests at the tops of trees, and even enlarge their nests every year. In fact, these nests can be as wide as 10 feet and as heavy as a thousand pounds! This might seem big, but keep in mind that bald eagles are rather large, with up to a 7foot wing span. They need that room to spread their wings!
Bald eagles are essential to the environment. They eat carrion, which helps keep the land clean. Because they are great hunters, they also help balance animal populations. This beautiful bird once came close to extinction in the 1960s and were officially put on the endangered animals list in 1976. However, thanks to many conservation efforts, the American eagle downgraded from the endangered to the threatened list.
