The Sumatran orangutan is a critically endangered primate species that lives only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It is distinguished from other orangutans by its smaller body size, lighter colour and longer hair. The males have distinctive cheek discs and a throat that aids in making deep vocal utterances. The Sumatran orangutan spends most of its time in the treetops, where it feeds mainly on fruit, leaves and insects. The species is seriously threatened by rainforest clearing and illegal hunting, which has had a major impact on its population, which is now estimated at just a few thousand individuals.
