Homelessness in Dallas and Collin counties has trended downward in the last couple years. It’s a stark contrast to the national picture of rising homelessness, and it’s partly due to a shift in tactics for helping people living in encampments leave homelessness behind. This process, called “encampment decommissioning,” is relatively new in Dallas and is a change from previous approaches to homeless encampments.
'A new way home' follows caseworkers and residents from an encampment under an East Dallas overpass as it was closed and its residents were moved into longterm housing and connected to services meant to help them stay housed.
