A tug of war broke out between the Congress and ruling NDA after the Rajya Sabha chairperson revealed that a bundle of currency notes was found from Congress MP Abhishek Singhvi's seat.
Jagdeep Dhankhar said a wad of currency notes was found on Thursday from seat number 222, currently assigned to Singhvi. The cash was found during a routine antisabotage check.
This revelation was enough to trigger a strong exchange between the Treasury benches and Congress MPs in the Upper House.
Singhvi clarified and termed the situation “bizarre".
But this episode brings back memories of 22 July 2008, when three BJP MPs waved wads of curreny notes in the Lok Sabha during the Confidence Vote against UPA1 government of Manmohan Singh.
The then Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee ordered a probe by a parliamentary committee. Four months later, the committee's report gave a clean chit to Amar Singh and Ahmed Patel. It also recommended further probe against three others accused in the case.
In January 2009, the Delhi Police registered an FIR and began its investigation.
In 2013, U.S dilpmatic cables were leaked on WikiLeaks. They revealed that an aide of a Congress leader was quoted saying Rs 50 crore had been set aside to buy support during trust vote.
While this triggered another storm, the Delhi Police was pulled up by the Supreme Court after a PIL sought a timebound investigation.
After this, the Delhi Police swung into action and made arrests. Those sent to jail included Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, his aide Sanjeev Saxena, LK Advani's former advisor Sudheendra Kulkarni and BJP Yuva Morcha activist Suhail Hindustani.
But by the end of 2013, six out of the seven accused were acquitted. In 2015, the last accused Sanjeev Saxena too was discharged.
